H.o.p., above, scanning for more sculptures he wanted me to photograph at the Museum of Modern Art. He was also attracted to the paintings by Magritte, wanting photos of those.

In his bag was a sketchbook. When he saw something he wanted to draw, I’d locate a place out of the way of traffic and he’d settle down and do his drawing as he can’t sketch standing up. This was easier at the Museum of Natural History than at MoMA. There were guards everywhere at MoMA and all were very nice to him. He enjoyed asking them questions and none were condescending in their responses. For instance, he was curious about the Martin Puryear exhibit, the sign mentioning the fragility of the sculptures, and asked how this was so, and the guard took him over to several pieces showing how though the sculpture looked solid it wasn’t.
