Down Time

My sites are on Dreamhost. Which used to be great (I’ve been with them for years) but is now sometimes a true pain in the ass. There was a major outage yesterday (took down my sites for hours) and one couldn’t even reach their status blog. It’s now back online though and I see there is another scheduled outage of 20 minutes tonight though if something “goes wrong” it could take “much longer”. Plus it’ll take down their status blog again, apparently.

Why the hell don’t they put their status blog on something like blogger or WordPress blogs?

I’m surprised there’s not been more outrage on the Dreamhost forum. Or on the status blog. But then I’ve not posted my grumblings either. Because everything in My Computer Land is messed up, so why not Dreamhost?

Can’t figure out what’s wrong with my computer but it has gotten way funky, been funky for a while and keeps getting funkier.

Dell screwed me over with this monitor that went bad and keeps getting worse and worse. The top and sides of the screen look like they were soaked in gutter water and left to dry.

I HATE MY ISP, but do we really want to switch from Scientology founded Earthlink (yes! well, after a fashion) to AT&T? I think we do because Earthlink sucks so bad but we just keep talking about it and have the AT&T web page perpetually open on the desk top but haven’t done it yet.

Sky Dayton founded Earthlink. On his home page is the following quote:

Communication is the solvent for all things.

L. Ron Hubbard

After I found that out, I learned that H.o.p.’s beloved Neopets site is run by Scientologists.

Doug Dohring, Neopets CEO says,

Having used his [Hubbard’s] technology in every business activity for nearly two decades now, Mr. Hubbard’s organizational concepts are always with me to the point where virtually every aspect of running my companies involves the use of his administrative technology…

And what are those organizational principles founded upon?

Hubbard’s Administrative Technology is based on the Org Board, short for organizing board. This system creates seven divisions within a company: executive, personnel, sales, finance, training, marketing and qualifications, with three subdivisions within each division…Hubbard described the Org Board in a 1965 lecture as a system that had been in use by a galactic civilization for 80 trillion years in the past — his system is an improvement upon this existing system…

Yes, well, I guess those org principles are doing OK for Neopets, but damn, Earthlink is all messed up.

Eew, L. Ron Hubbard.

I’m sorry I learned that about Neopets.

    No!!! Neopets and Scientologists!?!?

My daughter started delving into Neopets last year and after just a few visits, etc, our computer was messed up. I have no reason to suspect it was connected, but I told her, no more Neopets. We haven’t had any problems of the same ilk since.

OMG, the horror! The horror! They’re everywhere!

H.o.p. had that problem on his computer. I think Neopets was the source for a lot of annoying ad-type spyware we found. Though we’re not sure. He also visits Ebay a lot.
But there was a lot of spyware that we had to take off his computer.

If you’re using a windows ‘puter, then running the Disk Cleanup applet may just help you out.

I fix teh PCs for a livin’ and this frequently helps w/ what you’ve (a bit briefly) described.

Open My Computer and Right Click on Local Disk (C)
Click on Properties (at the bottom of the list that pops up)

There’s a colorful graph of your hard drive and next to it a small button/box which is the Disk Cleanup. Click that and, eventually, a wee window will pop-up.

Personally, I recommend checking every box that shows any size at all. Just make sure you know all your website passwords, as you’ll be clearing the cache in which they’re stored when you click OK.

    Click OK.

It’ll take a while; maybe an hour, but at least 5 or 10 mins.

I charge $50 an hour to do this for folks who, for whatever their own loverly reasons, are afraid to do it themselves. I’d do it for free (or at least food or beer,) but, as my geekier co-workers assure me, that’s just wrong. In this case, I often enjoy your comments on Saying Yes and RoD (I think…) as well as your site right here (love teh ‘stronomy pics!) so hope this helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, I remember how much m’ step-kiddo loved her EVIL NeoPet. {sigh} Boy was I glad when it finally croaked from inattention! ๐Ÿ˜€ I was able to whack that spy-ware it needed installed i/o for her to play at that game.

    Enjoy!

Thanks, Michael. I’m ashamed of myself! I’ve not run a disk cleanup in forever. Will do it tonight.

The Neopet is going to be with us for a while. H.o.p. loves it and is dedicated to keeping it happily fed with free omelet.
