Another Unauthorized Messy Cover Song by Catastrophic Audio – Baby’s in Black

Another Unauthorized Messy Cover by Catastrophic Audio. (Been a while since I’ve posted one of these.)

#6. Baby’s in Black.

Vocals by me. All instrumentation by Marty. Engineered by him and co-produced by Marty and me. Recorded 1997.

The previous Unauthorized Messy Covers are under the “The Unauthorized Cover” category and include She Said She Said, Helter Skelter, Gimme Some Truth, Happiness is a Warm Gun and Revolution.

I may as well put them all up. Have several more.

Okay, there must be something you can’t do… might be an interesting post. “Here’s the one thing I CAN’T do”. 🙂

Oh, I thought my blog made it abundantly clear all the many things that I can’t do. 🙂

I have downloaded all your songs except revolution, which is realaudio and does not play on my itunes, and I hear them occasionally when they turn up randomly when I am listening to my computer. I like them. I look forward to hearing the others you have.

Jim, I’m pleased if you like them. I’ll do a reconversion of Revolution into an mp3.

Some of the other songs we did were:

Mean Mr. Mustard-Polythene Pam-She Came in Through the Bathroom Window
    We Can Work It Out
    You Won’t See Me
    Things We Said Today
    The Night Before
You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away
    You Can’t Do That

Some are better than others. There are choices I made on almost all of them that make me squirm now, but I was listening to some Beatles covers on an alternative station the other night and decided I might as well put the rest of these up.

We also did another cassette a few years earlier which was pretty primitive (Marty was just learning how to record) but had a few fun things on it.

    Bus Stop
    Not Your Stepping Stone
    Girl from Ipanema
    All The Way (Frank Sinatra)
    Hound Dog
These Boots are Made For Walking

I’m trying to get Marty to prepare it so I can convert it to mp3 but first we have to get a DAT player as they’re all on DAT. I’ve been trying for a couple of years to get Marty to transfer them.

These were all of them one take things with voice overdubs. I had certain ideas of things I wanted with the songs, and principally it was my way of getting Marty to play some guitar. I really did do a lot of the production, going for a certain sound, and a lot of the sound I wanted was in Marty’s guitar playing. He’s a keyboardist, only rarely played guitar on stage, and I loved his guitar playing.

Marty says, “You definitely produced those tracks. You were the boss, without a doubt.”

I’m not crazy about my voice (I’ve never liked my tone) but I’m the only one I knew who could sing what I wanted. Any other singer I knew would have been concerned with sounding…good.
